The head coach of India, Igor Stimak, greeted Sunila Chetrie on Sunday and said that the captain of the mascot was among the people who praised Indian football for his dedication during his illustrious 15-year career.
Friday, Chetrie, 35, was only the second Indian after the legendary Baichung Bhutya to spend 15 years in Indian knitting fashion. In 2005 he made his debut in Quetta in a friendly match against Pakistan. He scored a goal in a 1-1 tie.
According to Stimak, it’s Chetrie who always walks in the extra space and sweats a little during training, which encourages the youngsters to imitate him.
I see him as someone who always sets the bar for training and never endangers the regime. He controls the team and is the character who defines the team. Many personalities have made the history of Indian football famous, and he is certainly one of those who have made his country proud, said the Croatian tactician.
A supporter, a workaholic and a man on the team are some of the attributes that distinguish Sunila Chchetri, he said in an All India Football Federation publication.
The former Croatian World Champion, who led the national team last year, remembers seeing Chetrie at the training camp in preparation for the King’s Cup in 2019 – his first mission with the Blue Tigers.
He pointed out that although Chetrie is the oldest member of the team, he did his best to achieve positive results at the AFC Asian Cup after he broke his heart.
When I first saw him last year, they returned to the national team camp after a long break after the AFC Asian Cup. Some of the boys were new, but the fire under his belly was probably bigger than someone else’s. That’s the secret of his long career. Congratulations! Stimac said.
Former India coach Sukhwinder Singh, who led the Indians in the 2005 match against Pakistan, said he wasn’t sure about Chetree’s credibility at the time.
I needed someone who was cunning, wasn’t afraid and had to be quick. To be honest, Sunil wasn’t in my head at all. He wasn’t my first option. I had my doubts, Mr. Sukhwinder said.
I’ve seen him mature within the YCW and it showed me what he can do in the future. I remember how hungry he was. In my 19 years as a coach, I have never seen anyone as dedicated as Sunil. He remained firm and never hesitated to work.
Responsibility for 15 years requires discipline, and more importantly, it retains it.
